Vasile Alecsandri University of Bac?u has a history that dates back to 1961, when the Pedagogical Institute of Bac?u was founded with faculties in humanities, mathematics and natural sciences. Through the decades it evolved, first becoming the Institute of Higher Education in 1976, then a Sub‐Engineering Institute linked to Ia?i in 1984, and finally a fully independent university in 1990. It adopted its current name in 2009 in honour of the Romanian poet and diplomat Vasile Alecsandri. 

It is located in the city of Bac?u.

The university is organised into five faculties: engineering, letters, sciences, economic sciences, and movement, sports and health sciences. Within each faculty are different departments, offering a range of degree programmes at bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral level. The university also has a pre and in-service teacher training department.

Across two campuses (M?r??e?ti and Spiru Haret), the university operates nine academic buildings, four hostels, a central library, canteen, and student services.

The university participates in academic mobility and exchange with over 70 European institutions under SOCRATES/Erasmus initiatives and maintains additional agreements with global research partners.
