Education secretary Charles Clarke has challenged universities to think more creatively about how to best use e-learning.

At the launch of the government's e-learning strategy consultation document this week, he called for a dialogue on e-learning so that people stopped seeing it as a "wonky, geeky sort of thing".

Diana Laurillard, of the Department for Education and Skills e-learning strategy unit and report author, said higher education "leaders are not fully engaged" in e-learning. The DFES consultation ends January 30 2004.

The English funding council is to consult on e-learning over the next five months, until December 1.
