Seven universities shared ?31 million under the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council's science and innovation awards this week.
The winners of the awards, which were jointly funded by the funding councils, were: Oxford, ?3.3 million; Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt, ?3.4 million; Cardiff, ?3.8 million; Sheffield, ?4.3 million; Strathclyde and Glasgow, ?4.4 million; Cambridge, Oxford and Imperial College London, ?6 million; Birmingham and Nottingham, ?6 million.
The research areas range from renewable energy generation to physical organic chemistry and establishing a Midlands ultracold atom research centre.
