Lord Robert May has been awarded the Royal Society's Copley medal for his contributions to ecology and mathematics. Lord May, a professor of zoology at Oxford University and Imperial College London and former Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government, works on the factors influencing the diversity and abundance of plant and animal species and the rates, causes and consequences of extinction. The Copley Medal was first awarded by the Royal Society in 1731.
