Interim data suggests postgraduate students this year will outnumber the total for 1997-98. A snapshot of the student population taken in December 1998 by the Higher Education Statistics Agency recorded 48,903 full-time and sandwich postgraduate research students. This compares with the final 1997-98 figure of 48,314.
