Reviewing books on writing systems (91茄子S, October 18), Oliver Moore makes the remarkable claim that "no one has yet invented a purely written language". John Wilkins invented one as long ago as 1668 and the Royal Society set up a committee to improve it. The limitations of such systems have nothing to do with questions of pronunciation.
