A common genetic variation is linked to a substantial increase in the risk of heart attacks, US researchers have found. The team at Emory University's School of Medicine, Duke University and the University of Pennsylvania found the gene variation was present in 21 per cent of heart attack victims and 31 per cent of early onset cases. Just over a fifth of people of European decent carry a copy of the genetic variation from each parent.
