The government has pledged ?20 million towards an interdisciplinary research centre pioneering "next-wave intelligent products" such as fridges that order groceries direct from shops.
Universities are expected to bid to host the centre, which should attract ?20 million in match funding from industry.
E-minister Patricia Hewitt has also announced ?20 million for a high-speed national supercomputing grid.
