Sucrose given to newborn babies as a routine form of pain relief does not work, according to a study. Instead, the sugar elicits facial expressions in some babies that give the false impression that their discomfort has eased. The finding, from a study led by University College London, could lead to changes in the management of pain relief for newborns. The Medical Research Council funded the research, which involved 59 babies.
