About Us

The School of Neuroscience at King’s College London is the second largest university neuroscience department in the UK, with approximately 100 faculty and a total of 600 staff and students.

The School holds approximately ?220 million in currently-active research grants, and, out of all universities globally, has the 4th highest number of highly-cited publications in neuroscience (source: SciVal 2022).

The regional Neurology and Neurosurgery service is located in King’s College Hospital on the same campus, and, including stroke and neurorehabilitation, has approximately 200 inpatient beds, making it one of the largest and busiest such centres in the UK. King’s College Hospital is home to the largest EEG department in the UK and one of the busiest epilepsy specialist services.

About The Role

This exciting research role will be responsible for continuing the successful delivery and future development of an ongoing epilepsy research project funded by the UK Epilepsy Research Institute. The Research Fellow will be using Natural Language Processing (NLP) methods, with a special focus on generative Large Language Models (LLMs), to interrogate a very large sample of Electronic Health Records from people with epilepsy across multiple NHS hospitals. They are expected to have some experience working with NLP in general and LLMs in particular.

They will also help to further develop machine learning models to predict clinical outcomes. Familiarity with current methods in this area is essential, as is the ability and knowledge to help develop new methods.

The postholder will also supervise a junior researcher. This is a full-time post (35 hours per week) and you will be offered an a fixed term contract until 28 February 2026.

About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria?


	PhD qualified in relevant subject area or equivalent professional experience
	Familiarity and experience with NLP methods and especially LLMs, evidenced by publications and/or dissertation or equivalent evidence of expertise and completed research outputs
	Data science skills, especially data analysis and prediction modelling
	Proven ability to write code in Python
	Experience working in a research team
	Excellent writing and communication skills, especially for academic papers


Desirable criteria


	Experience working with NHS data or other medical data
	Understanding of and experience working with digital neural networks
	Experience mentoring junior research staff
	Demonstrable career trajectory in AI Health

The Applied Research Fellowship aims to provide doctoral candidates who are about to complete or have recently completed their studies an opportunity to engage in advanced training and/or research at an overseas university for one year.?

Besides financial support, awardees will also receive academic mentorship.?

Upon completion of the Fellowship, awardees will be considered for Assistant Professorship.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

	Have been accepted or have applied for a postdoctoral training at a leading overseas university in a research area that is aligned with SIT’s supported areas?

About the opportunity

Reporting directly to the Dean of Science, the Head of School, Life and Environmental Sciences is an integral member of the Faculty Leadership Group. The successful candidate will contribute to overall faculty strategy while leading and implementing strategic and operational plans at the school level, with responsibility for teaching, learning and research outcomes across SOLES' diverse fields of inquiry.

This position holds substantial responsibility for curriculum design and delivery, research and education strategy development, resource management, talent development, and external engagement. The Head of School will ensure alignment between school activities and faculty objectives, university policies, and external standards, while managing the school budget and maintaining financial sustainability.

The role requires a leader who can embody and enable the University's values in relation to its people and culture, creating an environment that fosters excellence, innovation, and collaboration across the School's geographically dispersed campuses and diverse academic community.

About you (skills, capabilities and experience)

You will bring strong research credibility into this role. Cross-disciplinary experience is highly valued, as isevidence of previously holding competitive research grants and leading significant academic and research programs.

With a PhD in an academic field relevant to the School, your leadership will be characterised by strong governance, delegation capabilities, and a demonstrated ability to manage complex academic environments. Financial and operational management experience will be essential, as will a demonstrated understanding of and ability to lead academic endeavours from curriculum design to producing leading research and providing a student-enabling environment.

You will have in-depth knowledge and understanding of key strategic issues in the higher education sector, along with proven experience in people leadership and management. Your established relationships with key academic, industry and professional institutions will be valuable in enhancing the standing and reputation of the School of Life and Environmental Sciences, the Faculty of Science, and the University more broadly.

Term and remuneration

The term of the appointment is four years on a full-time basis with a competitive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate's relevant experience and qualifications. The successful candidate will also be offered a professorial appointment in an appropriate discipline in the school and will retain that position at the conclusion of their headship.

Programme Leads are essential to the success of our online ambitions and will be joining at an exciting time as we create an online education offer that proactively supports our students. We are looking for applicants who have programme/module design experience and have previously taught as part of a fully online programme. You will understand quality, regulatory and policy requirements for delivering HE education and experience of working to these expectations.
