The African Sustainable Agriculture Research Institute (ASARI) is a component of the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P). It is located in Laayoune City, in south of Morocco. Oriented towards Africa, ASARI acts in connection with a wide network of universities and research centers around the continent in order to link real field issues with up-to-date science. The institute has attracted multidisciplinary research teams composed of food engineers, agronomists, biochemists, biologists, … etc.

Description of the position:


	Run research activities in animal food technology (meat and milk) derived from different animal species (camels, goats, sheep, …) in the Southern part of Morocco.
	Assist in the teaching activities as a team member of animal science program at UM6P-ASARI, to support courses related to:
	
		Food technology (for farmers).
		Technology Instrumental process and product control; sensory analysis.
		milk and meat Technology.
	
	
	Assist in the internal and external services of the department.
	Research proposal writing for external funding
	Report writing for research project
	Manuscript writing and publication in referee journal.


The candidate will also be expected to help maintain all field and laboratory equipment, order supplies and help maintain research plot records and. Responsibilities also involve frequent travelling to different areas in Morocco and Africa.

	Considering the job content, there are high expectations regarding social and organisational skills. 	Knowledge of Arabic, French and English is sufficient to support teaching activities for students and farmers as well.

Oriented towards Africa, ASARI acts in connection with a wide network of universities and research centers around the continent in order to link real field issues with up-to-date science. The institute consists of a multidisciplinary team of agronomists, biochemists, molecular biologists, bioprocess specialists, animal scientist, etc to respond to regional challenges affecting marginal environments.

ASARI is composed of five main research programs:


	Agriculture in Marginal lands: leverages up-to-date technologies in the service of the Southern Moroccan and Sub-Saharan agriculture challenges. Its ambition is to conduct relevant and cutting-edge research on biosaline agriculture, plant/crop improvement, genetics, etc….
	Animal Value Chain: Focuses on camel and goats and aims to tackle several challenges related to animal selection, reproduction, and health as well as the valorization of animal products.
	Biorefinery and Bioenergy: Combines cutting-edge research approaches with local know-how using the circular economy concept to create value from local bioresources and have a positive impact on the local communities.
	Algal Biotechnology: focuses on market-oriented research adapted to national and African challenges. It is a driving force for the entire algae sector in Morocco and Africa including micro and macroalgae as it is providing cutting-edge infrastructure for both cultivation and conversion at the Lab and the pre-industrial scale. It targets a wide range of applications such as agriculture, environment, food, feed, cosmetic, pharmaceutic, biomaterial, and energy, etc... It aims to be recognized as the main crossroad for meetings and exchange between all the stakeholders of the sector through the establishment and mutualization of pre-industrial pilot-scale infrastructure.
	Water & Energy Sustainability: is oriented towards the development of cost-effective solutions for water desalinization and wastewater treatment for applications in agriculture as well as domestic and industrial use. The program focuses on the efficient use of solar, wind and marine energy and the development of new approaches for the production of green energy to address real local and regional challenges.


About Research Center on Algal Biotechnology (RCAB) – UM6P Laayoune:

The Research Center on Algal Biotechnology (RCAB) is a new component of the University Mohammed VI Polytechnic (UM6P). It is located in Laayoune City and constitutes a structure of practical-based research with a vision of offering versatile infrastructure for cultivation and conversion of algae based on merging biotechnology, environmental science, and sustainability. Driven by innovation, sustainability, and interdisciplinary collaboration, the center aims to bridge research and practical applications for the development of a large spectrum of applications in agriculture, cosmetical, pharmaceuticals, feed and food industry, bioremediation, climate change mitigation, and renewable energy production.

Description of the position:


	Develop and implement the mission and the vision of the research center,
	Lead and conduct cutting-edge research activities that contribute to the sustainable use of algae in various applications,
	Design curricula to meet the industry demands in algal biotechnology (microalgae, cyanobacteria, and seaweeds).
	Develop undergraduate and graduate-level courses in algal biotechnology (algal cultivation and bioprocessing),
	Mentor junior faculty members and supervise postdocs, PhD and MSc students, research engineers, and technicians.
	Establish collaborations with industrial partners, governmental agencies, and research institutions,
	Engage in departmental and institutional committees,

About the PHENO-MA Platform:

The PHENO-MA is an innovative research platform for high-throughput plant phenotyping built and established at the University Mohammed VI Polytechnic (UM6P) in Benguerir – Morocco. It can be used to assess plant responses to nutrient deficiency, drought, high temperature, pests, and diseases, and exploring smart solutions to enhance resistance and boost crop productivity. The platform includes:


	An outdoor system with a (i) a fully automated lysimetric system with 1400 large container (mini-plots) to study water dynamics and drought scenarios simulation under close-to-field conditions, and (ii) a fully autonomous phenotyping robot, Phenomobile.v2+, equipped with a set of sensors (LiDAR, RGB, IR, and Spectrometer) that enable advanced plant measurements, that allow us to assess plant’s water budget in response to abiotic stress and nutrients’ application.
	An indoor system with (i) the phenotyping machines, "PhenoMerzouga.v2", which is a small-scale lysimetric system for simulating climate change scenarios, and (ii) 150 m? of growth chambers and speed breeding platform to accelerate the genetic gain and germplasm development.


Job description:

We are seeking a Post-Doctoral Fellow specializing in Plant Phenotyping using Image Analysis. The successful candidate will conceive state-of-the-art imaging technologies and data analysis methods for high throughput quantification of plant traits in response to various stresses and cropping systems. This role is critical for enhancing the understanding of genotype interactions with environmental factors and developing resilient crop varieties. The successful candidate is expected to work with an interdisciplinary team to develop research programs revolving around crop improvement. The position is part of the PHENO-MA platform team. Priority will be given to the candidates having research experience particularly in international research organizations and on African agricultural challenges. Evidence and excellence in research and teaching are required all with the ability to professional engagement with a diverse faculty, staff, and students across the university and externally are required. Good English communication skills; both verbal and written are required.

Main responsibilities:

The successful candidate is expected to:


	Develop and implement innovative image analysis methods to quantify plant characteristics.
	Collaborate on multidisciplinary projects involving high-throughput phenotyping platforms.
	Apply machine learning and deep learning techniques to improve image processing and trait prediction.
	Analyze large datasets generated by the Phenomobile.v2+ to identify key traits affecting crop performance under stress conditions.
	Implementing a multimodal approach for large-scale data analysis using CPU and GPU Solutions at the UM6P Data Center.
	Innovate and improve image analysis algorithms for plant trait quantification.
	Collaborate with international research teams and contribute to joint publications and presentations.
	Develop research proposals for funding from potential donors and prepare submissions for external, and international funding to support and maintain integrated research programs.
	Supervise graduate and undergraduate students, develop teaching materials, and attract high level-students.
	Contribute to the multidisciplinary research team in the development of the Crop Improvement team,
	Contribution to establishing and/or maintaining collaboration with other research entities at SAES college, UM6P and external partners,


Education, qualifications and experience 


	PhD in a relevant field such as plant sciences, computational biology, or bioengineering with a focus on image analysis.
	Proven experience with image processing software and techniques.
	Background in plant biology and physiology, especially related to stress responses.
	Experience with high-throughput phenotyping tools and data analysis.
	Publication record demonstrating expertise in phenotyping, image analysis, or related fields.
	High publication record; books, book chapters, and research papers in leading international and well-ranked journals.
