About the role

The Department of Physics is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Education who is keen to be part of a successful, friendly, and dynamic collaboration with the Department of Physics and King’s Foundations.

As a foundation year teacher, you will be teaching highly capable and motivated international students on the Kings’ Foundations programme, which is a one year RQF (Regulated Qualification Framework) Level 3 programme for those intending to progress to undergraduate degrees at university.

Your responsibility will be to enable our students to achieve their potential and progress to studying a degree as independent, critical and creative learners.? In addition, you will be given opportunities to contribute to the development and delivery of the Physics & Mathematics modules.

Please note that as some of the students you will teach will be under 18, you may be required to act as a Personal Tutor to these students and as such an enhanced check by the Disclosure and Barring Service is a prerequisite for the role.

The successful candidate will be joining the Physics Education Research Group, and will be expected to take a lead role in the teaching delivery of Departmental modules, and to carry out minor administration as requested by the Head of Department. Teaching experience at HE is essential. Experience of innovation in teaching methods would be an advantage.

This is a full time post (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract for 3 years.

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria


	PhD in Physics or closely related discipline
	Demonstrate aptitude and enthusiasm for teaching at pre-undergraduate level. Knowledge of effective pedagogy.
	Experience of having been responsible for academic development and pastoral care of students as a personal tutor
	Experience of teaching Level 3 Mathematics and Physics.


Desirable criteria


	Experience teaching on international foundation programmes in UK universities.
	Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
	Experience as a Personal Tutor to a large number of students
	Demonstrable interest/experience in STEM education, research, and HE teaching methods

Your personal sphere of influence The research group?“Atmospheric Transport Processes”, led by Prof. Andreas Stohl, is part of the?Department of Meteorology and Geophysics. The group develops the Lagrangian transport model FLEXPART and studies all aspects of transport in the atmosphere, ranging from greenhouse gases to pollutants, water vapour and heat, and uses inverse modelling techniques to determine sources of greenhouse gases, air pollutants and radionuclides.

We seek a highly motivated candidate to pursue his/her doctoral thesis within the research fields covered by our research group. These could be, for instance, theoretical and numerical improvements of FLEXPART, development of new application fields for the model, or applications of the model in existing application fields such as transport of heat and/or water in the atmosphere during extreme meteorological events; climatological analyses of air/heat/water transport using an existing Lagrangian re-analysis; development of a new Lagrangian re-analysis based on the forthcoming ERA6 reanalysis; inverse modelling of greenhouse gases, radionuclides or air pollutants in the atmosphere. We will select the best qualified candidate and will define the exact topic of the doctoral thesis together with him/her.

The employment duration is 4 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to?4 years?if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declaration. The position is available from?June 2025, but a later starting time can be negotiated.?The review of applications will begin on 25 May 2025 but the search will continue until the decision is made.

Your future tasks:

Active participation in research and teaching, which means you will:


	Contribute to the further development of the Lagrangian transport model FLEXPART;
	Use?FLEXPART, you will conduct research in the topical field of the doctoral thesis;
	Teach within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement;
	Publish your scientific results in peer-reviewed journals;
	Strengthen the collaborative culture of our team and the Department;
	Become an active member of the Vienna International School of Earth and Space Sciences (VISESS / doctoral school).


You will require:


	Completed master or diploma in the atmospheric sciences (e.g., meteorology, climatology), or a related field;
	Programming and data analysis experience;
	A good team spirit and willingness to collaborate;
	Strong English communication skills.


These skills would be an advantage:


	Experience with Lagrangian transport models;
	Expert knowledge of programming, preferably in Python and/or Fortran.

SECTION I: JOB PURPOSE

The Dean provides strategic and operational leadership for the College of Health Sciences, which is rapidly becoming a leading provider of health science education, research and consultancy in the UAE. The Dean develops structures and hires faculty and staff worthy of the College to deliver the College’s provision and to plan for growth while establishing the highest standards of academic quality and clinical skills. The Dean secures professional body accreditations at national and international levels, enhances collaborations with world-class higher education institutions, and establishes clinical partnerships to further both teaching and research. The Dean establishes laboratory facilities for clinical teaching and research and develops models for their efficient use, including by students and colleagues from other Colleges of the University. Under the Dean’s leadership, the College contributes to the enhancement of the University’s reputation for teaching, research, industry engagement and employability. With students at the heart of what we do, the Dean strives constantly to enhance student success in education and employment, provide opportunities for them to excel in curricular and extra-curricular activities, and create partnerships to enable first class training in clinical skills.

SECTION II: KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership & Management


	Lead the development, growth, and sustainability of the College of Health Sciences, through relevant, attractive, and financially viable teaching programs at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, using synergies with programs in other ADU Colleges, and productive collaboration with external partners.
	Develop strong relationships with national and regional health care planners, commissioners, providers, professional bodies, and health professions accreditors to ensure that our teaching and research are aligned with professional standards and that our graduates are sought after by employers.
	Personally and through College faculty, establish and strengthen links with relevant regulatory authorities, governmental bodies, hospitals, primary care providers and other stakeholders to ensure that our taught programs and research are impacting on and responding to national and regional health care and professional health workforce priorities.
	Develop and implement best practice in laboratory provision and use, pedagogy, assessment, quality enhancement, professional ethics and clinical skills development.
	Be committed continually to improving student success (as measured by student engagement and satisfaction, retention, completions, GPA, employability) at the College level and to contribute to such efforts across the University.
	Ensure that the College engages in research that addresses national and regional challenges and contributes to teaching, pedagogic and clinical skills developments.
	Lead in the recruitment and selection of highly qualified faculty and staff, ensure the effective leadership and development of faculty and staff, and manage faculty and staff workloads, performance evaluations and promotions.
	Ensure that relations with accreditors (the CAA, WASC, ADEK, KHDA and health care professional bodies) are developed and enhanced, that requirements for accreditations are met, and that new accreditations are secured where these would enhance program reputation and improve student employability.
	Ensure that leadership and governance at College level is of the highest quality. Participate in and lead in University level governance arrangements.
	Serve as a key member of the Provost’s leadership team, playing a central role in delivering the University’s Strategic Plan, meeting performance indicators and leading endeavours that will develop and enhance the reputation of the College and the University.
	Undertake other leadership duties as may reasonably be assigned by the Provost or Chancellor.


Marketing & Enrolment Management


	Working closely with marketing and enrolment colleagues, develop and implement College plans to attract well-qualified students to the College and ensure its growth.
	Plan and implement strategies to increase the number of programs at undergraduate level (in the next phase likely to be Health Communication and Informatics, Public Health Nutrition, Optometry and Vision Science, and Biomedical Sciences) and introduce appropriate programs at postgraduate level.
	Embed practices and support systems to ensure strong student retention and high levels of student engagement and satisfaction.
	Ensure that our marketing efforts are well targeted at potential national and international markets.


Financial and Strategic Planning


	Participates actively in supporting ADU's Strategic Plan at the College and University levels
	Ensures financial feasibility of the College and its constituent programs.
	Develops college action plans, implementation strategies and continuous improvement feedback mechanism.
	Manages the budget for the college.


Reporting and Accreditation


	Be responsible for quality and standards, including course approvals and reviews, applications for accreditation and ensure that reporting requirements are met fully and on time. Maintain strong links with accrediting and review bodies.

Minimum educational qualifications required for the role:


	Research Doctorate from an Internationally accredited HE institution Health science discipline.
	Clinical qualification at a suitable level.


Minimum Years and nature of relevant experience Required


	4 years of experience as Department Chair (or higher) or as an Associate Dean in an internationally accredited school of health.
	Record of achievements that would command the respect of peers and external stakeholders, including accrediting bodies, health care authorities, and professionals in relevant fields.
	Ability to attract high caliber faculty, clinical, technical, and professional services staff to a newly established College.
	Evidence of being student focused.
	If not already a Professor, a senior academic or clinician with the credentials to be appointed as Professor.

	Leadership skills to create and deliver an ambitious vision for the new College through carefully designed strategy and plans and the ability to implement to deadlines, quality and budgets.

The School of Interdisciplinary Studies (SIS) was established to deepen interdisciplinary studies and scholarly collaboration. The SIS houses a number of interdisciplinary undergraduate programmes.
