About Mount Kenya University

Basic information and contact details for Mount Kenya University

institution

Mount Kenya University was first established in 1996 as a computer outreach programme known as Thika Institute of Technology. It has since grown to be an institution with more than 40,000 students in including more than 500 from overseas and a network of campuses covering most of Kenya.

Landmarks in this progress include becoming the first private institution in Kenya to train pharmacists in 2005, the offer of degrees and diplomas in partnership with Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology from 2006, becoming MKU in 2008 and opening a campus in Kigali, Rwanda in 2016.

The main campus remains at Thika, 30 miles north of Kenya’s capital Nairobi, home to the landmark Alumni Plaza towerblock and faculties including five medical disciplines.

Kigali became an independent institution in 2025, but MKU retains campuses in Nairobi, Parklands, Nakuru, Eldoret, Meru and Kisii. Recent developments include the opening of the Maritime Academy at Malindi in 2024 and a Mombasa campus in 2025.
