The role

We are looking to recruit an Autoclave lab technician (part-time post at 0.6FTE which is 21.6 hours per week) within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Surrey.?

Under the direction of the Senior Laboratory Technician, you will support operation of high-throughput decontamination and processing of laboratory waste materials as well as occasionally providing support to and working with other laboratory technicians within the school of Biosciences & Medicine.

Key duties include:?


	Daily collection of biological waste from teaching and research laboratories
	Daily operation of waste autoclaves and glass washers
	Achieving efficient turnaround times for reusable lab equipment
	Working with the team to ensure a reliable, customer-friendly service


About you

Ideally, you have experience of working in either laboratory environment, food industry, catering, medical or social care and have a good understanding of the Health & Safety aspects of working with contaminated materials. Candidates returning from a career break, or parental leavers are encouraged to apply. Full training will be given on the relevant aspects of lab safety, chemical handling and biosafety involved.

Key to this role is a practical and methodical approach to work, ability to undertake manual handling of materials and an ability to work independently and have good time management skills.?

We are seeking to recruit a Research Fellow in Climate Dynamics to become a member of the School of Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton. The successful candidate will be part of the ‘Accurate projections of climate recovery from a combination of historical data, simple models and AI’ Future Leaders Fellowship project, which seeks to develop new modelling methods that combine historical climate data, simple physics-based models, and AI to deliver more accurate projections of how our climate will warm and recover in a net-zero future.

As part of this project, you will contribute to develop observation-constrained reduced-order models to reproduce ESM simulations. You will first analyse state-of-the-art Earth System Model (ESM) simulations and diagnose underlying processes for inter-model differences. Then you will use diagnosed processes to build reduced-order models and constrain model parameters using historical instrumental and palaeo-proxy records via Bayesian methods. The successful applicant will join the ocean and climate physics group at Southampton. You will have the opportunity to engage with the vibrant oceanographic and climate science community at the School of Ocean and Earth Science and the National Oceanography Centre, working closely with our national and international partners. By joining us, you’ll contribute to the next generation of climate modelling tools that integrate data and physics to deliver more accurate projections.

The post is a fixed-term appointment for 36 months (3 years), with the possibility of extension for up to one additional year, and is part of a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship project awarded to Dr Duo Chan.

About You

We invite applications from candidates holding a PhD (or equivalent) in climate science or a related field, with experience in designing and conducting climate model simulations and analysing large volumes of ESM simulations. Knowledge of reduced-order modelling and Bayesian inference is highly valued, and experience with climate mitigation scenarios is preferred. Applicants should demonstrate strong knowledge of statistics and large-scale climate dynamics, excellent quantitative and problem-solving skills, and effective communication abilities.

About The Role

This role will focus on ensuring the efficient and effective running of the office by supporting the senior leadership to function to the highest standard, assisting their work with internal and external stakeholders and providing excellent personal support. We are looking for candidates who have significant experience working with senior executive leaders providing efficient diary management, secretarial and administrative support in a Higher Education setting. The role holder will also work collaboratively with other staff within the Schools Professional Services Office and undertake duties that contribute to the operational efficiency of the wider School.

Ideally you will be educated to degree level or have substantial relevant experience, and experience providing high-level administrative and personal support, using a range of IT software packages including Office. The post holder will be responsible for engaging with both new and existing users to fully exploit the capabilities of the UK National Ion Beam Centre (IBC) at the University of Surrey. They will play a key role in developing and enhancing the facility’s technical capabilities to meet evolving user requirements. In addition, the post holder will actively engage with potential users and industry partners to attract new business opportunities and expand the IBC’s user base.

The role will also involve the operation of ion implantation facilities and providing technical support in the development and execution of user irradiation and implantation projects. The post holder will be expected to represent the IBC at scientific and technical meetings, presenting research outcomes, promoting facility expertise, and contributing to the Centre’s national and international visibility.

About you


	Working with users and other Facility Liaison Fellows, develop understanding and knowledge of the IBC user base with a view to recognising future needs/ “direction of travel” relevant to?#1;
	Under the guidance of the Head of Ion Beam Processing, develop the ion beam systems, technologies and capabilities within the IBC in order to maintain its position as a state-of-the-art facility;
	Lead in-house Quality Assurance program
	As appropriate, promote the IBC facilities and capabilities to relevant parties.
	Attend relevant symposia, conferences and industry gatherings in order to promote the IBC, as well as ensure that the IBC is at the forefront of its field.
	Write high-quality implant reports to users
	Publish journal articles.?
