About Shakarim University

Basic information and contact details for Shakarim University

institution

Shakarim University was originally founded in 1934 as the Semipalatinsk Pedagogical Institute. In 1995 Semipalatinsk Pedagogical Institute, Semipalatinsk Zootechnical Institute, and the Semipalatinsk Technological Institute merged to form the Semipalatinsk State University. Later in 2013, the university was renamed Shakarim University after the distinguished Kazakh poet and thinker Shakarim Qudaiberdiuly.

The university serves as the main educational, scientific and cultural hub in Semey, a prominent city in Kazakhstan’s northeast.

Shakarim University has academic buildings, well-equipped scientific labs and workshops, a library with over 700,000 volumes, sports complexes, a swimming pool, a medical centre, student housing and apartment-style dormitories.

When the university was first established it had just five faculties. It has since expanded to include nine faculties offering more than 45 undergraduate, 35 master’s and 10 doctoral programmes. These cover a wide range of disciplines, including food engineering, veterinary medicine and agriculture, physical and chemical sciences, digital technologies, and business and communication.
