Tashkent State University of Economics was officially established in 1931, but its roots go back to 1918 when vocational commerce courses started at Turkestan People¡¯s University. It is one of the largest universities in Uzbekistan.
The university was first called the Central Asian Financial and Economic Institute, then renamed the Tashkent Financial and Economic Institute during the Soviet period, and finally took its current name in 1991 after Uzbekistan became independent.
The university has five faculties: economics, corporate governance, accounting and audit, information systems in economy, and international tourism. It offers 24 undergraduate and 28 master¡¯s programmes in areas like finance, banking, marketing, hospitality management, and international economic relations. Some courses are run with international partners such as the London School of Economics and Political Science.
The university has the largest library in Central Asia and regularly hosts national and international conferences and academic events. It works on research projects with universities in the UK, Germany, and the US.
The city-centre campus in Tashkent includes dormitories, sports and IT facilities, a student health centre, and many clubs. Students take part in various societies and cultural events like the New Year¡¯s Eve Ball and Navruz celebrations.
